No matter who we are, what we do for a living, or what part of the world we live in, we have difficulty meeting all of our body's nutritional requirements. Unless, of course, you live in the forest, farm there, eat only whole, unadulterated food that you personally grow, drink only water, and experience no oxidative stress from polluted air, an overabundance of stress, insufficient rest, or too much fear.
Frequently, people who finally make the commitment to care for their bodies proudly begin taking supplements, only to stop after a short period because they do not experience results. They begin to believe that all supplements are a hoax. They begin to discourage friends and family from taking supplements.
After many years of research, we have found that most people who take nutritional supplements are not able to utilize the nutrients they receive. Many people experience pain, osteoporosis, or one of many forms of arthritis because many of the nutrients they take have been wasted as a result of inadequate absorption.
Often, inadequate absorption may happen when using synthetically derived supplements. These supplements are designed to be a close molecular match to the nutrient desired. Unfortunately, they do not provide the effect desired, either because these molecules are not recognized by the body or they are not presented in the proper combination for optimal absorption.
Inadequate absorption of nutrients also results from too few or the wrong balance of probiotics (good healthy flora or good bacteria) in the intestines. Without the right types of probiotics, most of the nutrients we consume just pass right through.
The Foundation of an Epidemic
Roughly 100 trillion microorganisms populate a healthy bowel. Probiotics (pro-life) are live strains of good bacteria, such as lactobacillus acidophilus. These good bacteria keep pathogens (harmful microorganisms) in balance, aid in digestion and the absorption of nutrients, and boost immune function.
Today, most people have tremendously low levels of probiotics in their intestinal tract. According to study at university of Michigan health system, "eliminating all the good microbes from our body results in a weaker immune system."
We normally replenish probiotics from the foods we consume. In fact probiotics have been a part of most ancient medical practices in the form of "cultured foods." In traditional Persian medicine, as well as Chinese, Hindu, Japanese and other ethnic medicinal practices, "fermented foods" are consumed to keep the immune system healthy.
In modern times, as foods undergo greater levels of processing, they lose beneficial bacteria. The more processed foods are consumed, the greater the loss of these beneficial bacteria.
Also, doctors and researchers indicate that while "antibiotics work to treat a disease, they also kill off healthy micro-organisms in the gastrointestinal tract, paving the way for harmful bacteria to take over."
As the level of probiotics in the intestines declines, other health conditions such as the following may appear:
• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
• Chronic fatigue
• Crohn's Disease
• Liver disease
• Acid reflux
• Bad breath
• Leaky gut syndrome (positive peg test)
• Low blood sugar(craving carbohydrates)
• Skin yeast infections
Understanding that 80% of the immune system is associated with the intestines, we need to make sure we keep our digestive tract clean and healthy.
Fennel has been used in Traditional Persian Medicine for centuries. It has a broad range of medical actions. It is a carminative (prevents the formation of gas in the intestines), antispasmodic (helps reduce muscle spasms), choleretic (increases gastric secretion), and anti-inflammatory (reduces systemic inflammation). It is also extremely high in many complex nutrients which makes it a potent antioxidant, anticancer and helps it to regulate weight and metabolism. It been used to treat all kinds of disorders from gas and belching, colic, and to help sooth difficult menstrual cycles.
Many studies have been done, showing it effectiveness for treating the conditions it has been traditionally associated with. In 2012 a study published in the journal Nutrition and Cancer found Anethole (a phytonutrient in fennel) has been shown to reduce NF-kappa B — a gene-altering and inflammation-triggering molecule — along with tumor necrosis factor (TNF) — a cancer-signaling molecule.
A study done by Azad University in 2014 found fennel reduced the duration, nausea, and weakness associated with the menstrual cycle of women who were treated vs those who were not.
The University of Michigan Health System shows several studies demonstrating the effectiveness of fennel for colic and general digestive problems.
Organic Peppermint Leaf
Though peppermint is a very common ingredient in many products, many people are not aware of its medicinal effects. Peppermint has been used for many years to treat digestive problems, colds and lung congestion, nausea, and soothe and cool the skin. Menthol (one of the active compounds in peppermint) is a common additive for its cooling and soothing properties. Peppermint has also shown strong antibacterial and anticancer effects.
Traditional Persian Medicine uses peppermint for digestive concerns, mental disturbances, PMS, sore throat, fever, and lung congestion.
The British Medical Journal published a study showing significant reduction in the symptoms associated with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). In 2007 Department of Medicine at G d'Annunzio University found the same.
Several studies show peppermint’s usefulness in cough and breathing difficulties. The School of Medicine at Chiba University in 1997 found menthol reduced the discomfort associated with loaded breathing. In 2013, The Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg found menthol to reduce coughs sensitivity.
The USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University published a review documenting many positive effects associated with peppermint.
Garlic is a powerful medicine as has been used in cultures all over the word. It has so many different actions is difficult to classify. Garlic has a strong effect on the heart, helping to reduce Arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), thin the blood, and reduce lipid levels. Garlic has also shown the ability to help regulate blood sugar, metabolism and the immune system. Garlic has strong antimicrobial action and has been used to treat both internal and external infections. It has even shown some effectiveness versus antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Traditional Persian Medicine has used garlic fresh and aged for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, infectious diseases, wounds, excessive fat, lung issues such as asthma and bronchitis, and many other conditions.
In 2012 The Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences found garlic to help regulate the immune system of postmenopausal osteoporotic women. The Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri (Milan, Italy) found garlic to have protective effects with the risks of endometrial cancer.
The Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in 2010 performed a study showing a significant decrease in the risk of cardiovascular risk in both men and women taking a garlic supplement; and in 2008 found better metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. In 2011 the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Karachi found the same.
The Department of Pharmacology, Kasturba Medical College performed a study showing the effectiveness of garlic paste on oral candidiasis (severe yeast infection) in 2005. And Ajoene, an organosulphur derived from garlic was used successfully to treat tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) by the Escuela de Medicina, Universidad de Oriente (Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela). And Allicin (another oranosulphur from garlic) was used shown to kill MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) at the University of East London, School of Health and Bioscience in 2004.
